Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Herdsmen-farmer conflicts have become one of the most significant challenges in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region, including Plateau State. These conflicts, often rooted in competition for land and water resources, have led to violence, displacement, and a breakdown of community relations. Riyom Local Government Area (LGA), known for its agrarian communities and grazing lands, has experienced repeated conflicts between herders and farmers. These conflicts not only threaten food security but also undermine social stability. Photography can serve as a powerful tool for documenting the human cost of these conflicts, raising awareness, and influencing policy change. This study explores the role of photography in highlighting the challenges of herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Riyom LGA, focusing on how visual documentation can contribute to the discourse on conflict resolution and the need for sustainable land-use policies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The herdsmen-farmer conflict in Riyom LGA, like in other parts of Nigeria, remains a critical issue that has not been sufficiently addressed through advocacy or visual documentation. While the conflict has drawn attention from the media, the portrayal of its impacts in the visual domain is limited. Photography offers a unique means of capturing the realities of these conflicts, providing both evidence and a compelling narrative that can influence public opinion and policy decisions. However, the role of photography in shedding light on the herdsmen-farmer conflict in Riyom remains underexplored. This study aims to examine how photography can be used to document the challenges faced by affected communities and raise awareness about the need for peaceful solutions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the role of photography in highlighting the challenges of herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Riyom LGA.
  2. To assess the impact of photography in raising public awareness about the effects of these conflicts.
  3. To explore how photography can contribute to conflict resolution and policy advocacy.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does photography document the challenges of herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Riyom LGA?
  2. What role does photography play in raising awareness about the impact of herdsmen-farmer conflicts?
  3. How effective is photography in influencing policies aimed at resolving herdsmen-farmer conflicts?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Photography significantly contributes to highlighting the challenges of herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Riyom LGA.
  2. Photographic documentation raises public awareness about the consequences of these conflicts.
  3. Photography plays a vital role in advocating for conflict resolution and policy change.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it demonstrates the potential of photography in addressing one of the most pressing issues facing rural communities in Nigeria. By documenting the realities of herdsmen-farmer conflicts, photography can inform the public, policymakers, and stakeholders about the magnitude of the problem, potentially leading to more effective conflict resolution strategies.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the use of photography to document herdsmen-farmer conflicts in Riyom LGA, Plateau State. It is limited to visual documentation and does not address other factors or methods involved in conflict resolution.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Herdsmen-Farmer Conflict: Disputes and violence between pastoralists and agricultural communities, often arising from competition over land and resources.
  2. Photography: The use of visual imagery to document the realities of herdsmen-farmer conflicts and their impact on local communities.
  3. Conflict Resolution: Efforts and strategies aimed at mitigating or resolving disputes between herders and farmers to promote peaceful coexistence.
